Olamide Samuel contributes to UN International Day for Disarmament and Non Proliferation Awareness Event

ONN joined the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Kyrgyzstan in Vienna to mark the International Day for Disarmament and Non Proliferation Awareness, highlighting the role of education, public engagement and partnerships in advancing sustainable security.

Open Nuclear Network was honoured to contribute to a special event in Vienna marking the International Day for Disarmament and Non Proliferation Awareness, organised by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, Vienna Office, in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Kyrgyzstan.

Representing ONN, Dr Olamide Samuel delivered remarks on the importance of education and partnerships in promoting disarmament and non proliferation awareness. Drawing on his blended academic, policy and diplomatic background, he reflected on the need to broaden how security is understood and taught, particularly at a time of rising global military expenditure, growing instability and renewed emphasis on conventional and nuclear capabilities.

His remarks underscored that security cannot be understood in narrowly militarised terms alone. A more comprehensive and sustainable approach must place people at the centre, recognising food, water, energy and health as core dimensions of human security. In this context, disarmament and non proliferation education remains essential, not only for current decision makers, but also for the next generation of leaders, educators and engaged citizens.

The event also highlighted the importance of cross sector partnerships in strengthening public awareness and building long term support for disarmament goals. As ONN’s work continues to bridge research, policy engagement and public education, the discussion resonated strongly with the organisation’s commitment to fostering informed dialogue on nuclear risk and international security.
