Open Nuclear Network (ONN) was honoured to take part in the recent United Nations Association - UK event marking 80 years since the first United Nations General Assembly.
The event opened with speeches by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock; and the UK Attorney General, Lord Hermer. Andreas Persbo, Director of the Open Nuclear Network, spoke on the Peace, Security and Justice panel alongside Lord George Robertson, former NATO Secretary-General, and Sanam Naraghi Anderlini, MBE, International Civil Society Action Network. The discussion was moderated by Jane Kinninmont, Director of UNA-UK.
The panel exa mined the UN’s role in international peace and security, the protection of human rights and international law, and the advancement of the women, peace and security agenda. Held at Methodist Central Hall Westminster, the event brought together more than 2,000 participants — including diplomats, parliamentarians, students, civil society changemakers, faith leaders and community activists — to reflect on the UN’s legacy and look ahead to its future in a changing world.
Open Nuclear Network was pleased to participate in this important moment, with the event supported by our parent foundation - PAX sapiens, alongside partners including Thorndon Partners, Devex, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Studio Sieler and Central Hall Westminster, with close cooperation from teams at UN Headquarters and United Nations Western Europe.
With multilateralism under pressure, the gathering was a timely reminder of the collective effort required to strengthen international cooperation for a safer, fairer and more sustainable world.
