ONN welcomes Christine Muttonen to the Advisory Council

Christine Muttonen, a seasoned parliamentarian and disarmament advocate, joins ONN’s Advisory Council. Her leadership across OSCE, PNND and Austria’s Parliament strengthens our mission for nuclear risk reduction.

Open Nuclear Network (ONN) is honoured to welcome Christine Muttonen as the newest member of our Advisory Council. A distinguished stateswoman and champion for peace and disarmament, Christine brings to ONN an invaluable wealth of experience from national and international political arenas.

Christine Muttonen currently serves as Vice-President of the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) and Co-President of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND). Her dedication to global peace, democratic institutions and disarmament has defined a career marked by principled leadership and international collaboration.

She was elected to the Austrian Parliament in 1999, where she served for 18 years as a member of the Social Democratic Party. Over this period, Christine was a spokesperson on Arts and Culture, and later on European Union and Foreign Affairs. Her leadership extended well beyond Austria’s borders, including impactful work within the Council of Europe and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA). In 2014, Christine Muttonen was elected Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, where she was appointed Special Representative for Central and Eastern Asia. Two years later, in 2016, she made history as only the second woman elected President of the OSCE PA.

Throughout her career, Christine has actively promoted democratic governance through election monitoring, serving as head of mission and special coordinator in various international contexts, including the 2014 elections in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the 2016 US elections.

Christine’s addition to the ONN Advisory Council marks a strategic alignment with our mission to reduce nuclear risks through impact-capable networks. Her unwavering commitment to disarmament, parliamentary diplomacy and multilateral cooperation will serve as a beacon in our work. We look forward to learning from her insights and collaborating to advance practical, forward-looking solutions to today’s most urgent nuclear challenges.
