ONN at 2025 AMC Cross-Disciplinary Conference in Sweden

The ONN team joined leading experts in Uppsala, Sweden, on 12–13 June 2025 for the fourth annual AMC Cross-Disciplinary Conference, Paths to Disarmament in Times of Nuclear Threat.

From 12 to 13 June 2025, members of the Open Nuclear Network (ONN) team participated in the fourth annual AMC Cross-Disciplinary Conference: Paths to Disarmament in Times of Nuclear Threat, hosted in Uppsala, Sweden.

The conference convened a wide range of scholars and practitioners across disciplines to explore new directions in disarmament policy, with a focus on integrating scientific and social science perspectives. ONN was proud to contribute to this dynamic forum through research presentations, expert engagement and dialogue with the Nordic radiological and nuclear (RN) community.

Presenting Best Practices for Countering RN Disinformation

ONN Research Analyst Valeriia Hesse presented preliminary findings from a forthcoming paper, Best Practice Guidance for Countering Radiological and Nuclear Disinformation in Multilateral Forums. The paper explores the strategic threat RN disinformation poses to multilateral diplomacy and institutional coherence and offers tailored best practice recommendations for three core stakeholder groups: state delegations, national policy apparatuses and international organisations. Drawing on an interdisciplinary literature review, expert interviews and a cross-sectoral workshop, the guidance emphasises proactive preparedness, cognitive resilience and institutional coordination to counter narrative manipulation in international forums.

Highlighting Gendered Dimensions of RN Disinformation

ONN Research Coordinator Elin Bergner also shared insights from her working paper, Gendered Disinformation in the Radiological and Nuclear Realm – an Introduction. The paper examines how gendered disinformation can be strategically deployed in RN contexts to undermine expertise, shape strategic discourse in conflict and exploit gendered patterns of information access and trust during radiological crises. It identifies emerging risks for nuclear governance and crisis communication, highlighting the need for gender-responsive approaches in disinformation countermeasures.

Poster Presentation: Novel Remote-Sensing Methods for Verification

ONN Senior Analyst Jaewoo Shin presented a research poster on innovative remote-sensing methods for monitoring and verification in the nuclear field. The poster showcased recent advances in data availability and analytical techniques that enhance situational awareness and transparency in nuclear verification efforts. It demonstrated how geospatial tools can contribute to more robust and data-driven approaches to nuclear risk reduction.
