ONN Engagement and Network Specialist Olamide Samuel participated in Wilton Park’s workshop on Irreversible Nuclear Disarmament (IND). The 2010 NPT Review Conference established three key principles of disarmament: transparency, verification, and irreversibility. While the first two have seen steady development, irreversibility remains underexplored.

In response, Wilton Park — in partnership with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs — has hosted a series of high-level dialogues on IND since 2022. This year's event marked the fourth iteration, building on previous efforts to define and advance the concept. ONN was pleased to contribute to the dialogue, which focused on how IND can be meaningfully presented at the 2026 NPT Review Conference and integrated into its outcomes. Deepening our understanding of the technical, legal, normative and political dimensions of irreversibility helps advance our shared goal of achieving and sustaining nuclear disarmament.

Kudos to Mark Smith, the UK FCDO and the Norwegian Government for convening and sustaining this important initiative.
